Visited a construction salvage yard in Portland last weekend and saw the real deal on materials
I went to this place called ReBuilding Center off Mississippi Ave to find cheap lumber for a tiny bookshelf project (I'm broke, obviously). Walked around for an hour and noticed they had whole stacks of solid oak cabinet doors for like $5 each. That got me thinking about how I've been wasting money on cheap particle board stuff from the big box stores that falls apart in a year. The oak doors were actually cheaper than MDF boards of similar size, plus they're way better looking. I grabbed two of them and some mismatched hinges for under $15 total. Has anyone else found a hidden gem like this for DIY projects in their city?

Man, those salvage spots are gold for solid wood finds.

Did you ever find something weird hidden inside a piece? I pulled an old dresser apart last summer. Found a stash of love letters from the 1940s tucked in a false bottom. They were from a soldier to his sweetheart. Kept them, felt wrong to toss. My point is you never know what stories come with that wood.
