My $3 thrift store rice cooker turned into a popcorn volcano

Picked up this tiny rice cooker at a Goodwill in Spokane for three bucks. Figured I'd try making popcorn in it since the internet said it works. Ended up with kernels bouncing off the ceiling and rice cooker literally jumping on the counter. Got about 4 pieces of edible popcorn out of the whole batch. Has anyone actually gotten this to work without making a mess?

Feel for you, those internet life hacks always sound way easier than they actually are. I tried the same thing a few years back with a super cheap popper I found, and my kitchen looked like a snow globe exploded. At least you got a wild story out of it for three bucks.
