A hostel owner in Barcelona gave me some blunt advice about booking tours...

I was planning a trip to Barcelona last spring and I went to book a guided tour through the hostel front desk. The owner stopped me and said don't book anything through us, we get a kickback and you pay double. She told me to walk two blocks down to a little shop that sells tickets for the same tours at half the price. I saved around 40 euros on a single day trip to Montserrat. Now I always ask locals where to book instead of trusting the front desk. Has anyone else found a better way to find deals on day trips without using the hostel?

She basically told you how to undercut her own employer.

Did that hostel owner really just lay it out straight like that for you? Ive stayed at plenty of hostels and that kind of honest advice is RARE, most of them are happy to take your cash. That's a solid tip about finding a local ticket shop instead of trusting the front desk.
