A stranger at the bus station talked me out of the 3am overnight ride

I was dead set on taking the 3am Greyhound from Chicago to Nashville to skip paying for a hostel night, then this older guy waiting for the same bus said he'd done that route twice and the layover in Indianapolis left him stranded until noon both times. He showed me his phone with the arrival times and sure enough, the connection was way too tight. I switched to a 9am train for $14 more and got into Nashville by 4pm with a full evening to explore. Have any of you ever gambled on a super cheap red-eye and ended up paying more in food or missed plans?
