Flight delay in Chicago taught me to pack a separate 'overnight bag' inside my carry-on
Got stuck at O'Hare for 14 hours last fall when our plane had mechanical issues. I had everything in one big backpack, so I had to dig through dirty laundry just to find my toothbrush and phone charger. Now I keep a small pouch with a change of socks, a t-shirt, a travel toothbrush, and a portable charger in the top of my bag. It's saved me twice since, including a missed connection in Denver. Has anyone else built a similar emergency kit, or do you just wing it and hope for the best?

Same thing happened to me in Atlanta once. Sat on the tarmac for 6 hours, then they cancelled the flight and we all got dumped back in the terminal at midnight. I had my phone at 4% and my charger was buried at the bottom of my bag under a hoodie and my laptop. I've never felt more stupid. Now I keep a ziplock with a spare charger, a clean pair of boxers, deodorant, and a granola bar in the front pocket of my carry-on. Still haven't needed to use it, but I don't care. That one night was enough.
