Found a trick for getting rid of those tiny air bubbles in shellac

Gotta disagree with you there. I've messed up more finishes by overcomplicating shellac than by just mixing it and slapping it on. All that standing and stirring introduces more dust and junk into the mix than it saves you from bubbles. Half the time I see people fussing with warm water baths they end up with shellac that's too thin or starts kicking off weird because they let it sit too long. If you just brush it on quick with a decent quality brush and don't overwork it, those tiny bubbles pop on their own anyway.

Tried writing a detailed character bio first and it killed my story, now I just start with a single scene instead

That coffee scene trick is gold, right? I did something similar with a character who was supposed to be this tough detective. Had pages of notes about his backstory and trauma. Nothing clicked until I wrote him losing his keys and cursing at his car. Then I knew he was actually just a stressed out guy pretending to be hard. So what happened in your coffee scene that cracked things open for you? Was it a tiny detail like how they held the cup or what they ordered? Or was it more about their interaction with the barista? I always worry that if I don't plan enough, I'll write myself into a corner with no way out. But then again, the unplanned stuff always feels more alive. How do you balance that fear of getting stuck against the payoff of discovering a character in the moment?

Shoutout to the $8 foam sleeping pad that saved me in a Denver hostel

Why would you buy a cheap pad instead of just asking the front desk for a real mattress topper or a different room? Seems like spending $8 on something you'll probably never use again is worse than just dealing with it for a few nights.

Found out my smart plugs draw more power than the things I plug into them

Exactly what harper_owens said about those cheap plugs is spot on. It drives me crazy how these "smart" devices end up being dumb about power usage. I had a similar thing with a wifi outlet strip I got on clearance and it was pulling like 5 watts even when nothing was plugged into it. That adds up over a year for sure. I ended up switching everything over to some Zigbee based plugs that use basically nothing idle and they work great with my hub. Harper_owens is totally right that it's better to spend a few extra bucks upfront than to get tricked by those bargain bin deals that cost you more in the long run.

Vent: That $60 laser level I was sure would be junk actually saved my butt

Wait, you dropped it twice and it still worked after that? That's wild for a $60 tool...
