Found out my hostel in Lisbon charged $9 a night and I booked the $31 hotel next door
Last month I was planning 4 nights in Lisbon and assumed a private hotel room was the smart move at $31 a night. Then a guy in the hostel common room showed me his bunk receipt and it came to $9 a night, breakfast included. I did the math and I paid $88 more to avoid sharing a room for 4 nights. It got me wondering how much I have been overpaying on other trips out of pure habit. What is the cheapest place you have stayed where the price honestly shocked you?
I mean yeah you paid more but is $88 over 4 nights really the thing to focus on here? That is like $22 a night to not deal with strangers snoring, people flicking lights on at 2am, and having to lock your bag every time you leave. Plenty of folks would pay that without blinking. The $9 bunk sounds great until you get a room with 6 dudes and one guy who came in drunk at 4am. You are not really comparing the same thing, so the math is not as clean as it looks. Maybe you overpaid by habit on some trips, sure, but this specific one does not seem like the crime you are making it out to be.
