Found out the hard way about Ryanair's second bag charge

I flew from Lisbon to Barcelona last month and thought I could bring my small backpack plus a plastic bag with snacks. At the gate they made me pay 45 euros because the plastic bag counted as a second carry-on. Has anyone else gotten burned by this rule or do they have a way to sneak snacks through without paying?

Lisbon airport is where I learned the same trick, except it was a folded up jacket in my hand. The guy at the gate made me stuff it into my backpack right there while everyone watched. It's like these airlines just picked a random moment to start enforcing rules that were always there. Same thing happens with those self checkout machines at the grocery store, the moment you think you've got the system figured out, it changes on you. Rule happy people just love catching you off guard.
