My cheap backpack zipper blew out in Lisbon last Tuesday

I was rushing to catch a train to Sintra and the main compartment just split open, spilling my stuff on the platform. I had to buy a roll of duct tape for 5 euros and wrap the whole thing up to get through the day. What's a good, actually durable daypack under $50 that can handle being stuffed full?

Honestly, the duct tape price is the real crime there. Lisbon can be brutal for that. For a daypack, you might need to adjust your budget a bit. Truly durable stuff under $50 is tough now. I've had good luck with simple Jansport backpacks. They're basic, but the lifetime warranty is real. I sent one in after years and they fixed it for free.

Notice how everything feels built to break now. Used to buy a backpack and have it for a decade, now we debate warranty logistics like it's normal.

Lifetime warranties sound great until you actually try to use them. Jansport made me pay for shipping and the whole process took over a month. For a cheap pack, that's more hassle than it's worth. You're better off buying something sturdy on sale and skipping the warranty runaround.
