My hostel booking screwup that cost me $40 extra

Last summer I booked a dorm bed in Barcelona through a third party site without checking if the hostel had a loyalty program. Showed up and the receptionist was like, 'you could have gotten a private room for what you paid.' She showed me their member rate was $28 a night while I paid $68 for a shared room with a squeaky bunk. Has anyone else gotten burned by not checking direct booking perks?
