Overheard a couple at the hostel in Lisbon talking about how they got a full refund on a non-refundable booking.
They called the hotel directly, not the booking site, and just asked nicely if they could move the date due to a 'family thing.' The manager said yes and switched it, no fee. I always thought those 'non-refundable' labels were final. Has anyone else had luck with this, or did they just get a nice person on a good day?

Read a travel blog that said calling the hotel directly works sometimes. They have more power to change things than the booking site does. It probably depends on who answers the phone.

Forget that, they just follow the booking site's rules.

Right, because hotel front desks are known for their endless free time and desire to override corporate policy. Sure, maybe if you get the one manager who hasn't had their soul crushed yet. Otherwise you're just another person yelling about a non-refundable rate.
