Shoutout to the $8 foam sleeping pad that saved me in a Denver hostel

I was trying to save money on a 4-day trip to Denver last fall and booked a hostel that claimed they had "mattresses" but really it was just a thin foam thing on a plywood board. First night I woke up with my hip digging into the wood and knew I couldn't do that for 3 more nights. Walked to a big box store and found a cheap foam camping pad for $8. That flimsy piece of foam made the difference between sleeping okay and sleeping like crap. So yeah that $8 investment saved me from being a grumpy zombie for the rest of the trip. Anyone else ever had to MacGyver a cheap fix at a budget place that turned out way better than expected?

Why would you buy a cheap pad instead of just asking the front desk for a real mattress topper or a different room? Seems like spending $8 on something you'll probably never use again is worse than just dealing with it for a few nights.

Front desk is a crapshoot, sometimes you get someone helpful, sometimes they just shrug and say sorry. Last time I asked for a topper they brought me a thin blanket and acted like that was the same thing. For eight bucks I know exactly what I'm getting and I don't have to wait around or argue with anybody. Plus that cheap pad can be used for camping, guest beds, or even just tossed in the car for road trips. Sometimes the simplest fix is just handling it yourself instead of hoping someone else cares.
