The train station trick that cut my Japan trip costs by a third
I used to book rail passes online months ahead, but on a trip to Kyoto last spring I walked up to a machine in Osaka station and noticed it had same-day discounts for off-peak trains. After testing it twice, I saved about $45 total on two long rides just by buying at 10am instead of pre-booking. Has anyone else found better deals by waiting until you're actually at the station?
Did you know some tickets get cheaper the day of if you buy after the morning rush? My cousin grabbed a last minute seat to Nagoya for less than half price once, though she did have to stand for part of it.
