Took the $18 bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai instead of the $60 train, still not sure I picked right
I had to get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai on a tight budget and the overnight bus was $18 while the train was $60, so I picked the bus to save the money. The seats reclined almost flat and it got in only 40 minutes late, but I could not sleep at all with the engine noise and the rest stop food made me feel off the next day. Does anyone else think the cheap sleeper bus is worth it, or do you just eat the extra cost for the train?

Did you try the upper deck? I took that same cheap bus last year and yeah the engine noise is brutal. I got a seat right over the back wheels and felt every bump for ten hours. The rest stop noodles got me too, spent the next morning in my hotel room instead of out walking around. Next time I'll just pay for the train and actually sleep.
