Hot take: a cashier at Food Lion in Raleigh caught me sleeping on the $4.99 rotisserie chicken and I've been mad ever since
Last Tuesday I was at the Food Lion on Western Blvd and the cashier scanned my usual frozen dinners, then rang up a rotisserie chicken instead with a wink. She said "hon, this is $4.99 and feeds you three meals, those boxes are $3 each and feed you once." I did the math in the parking lot and she was right, I was burning about $60 a month on sad microwave food. It stung because I thought I was already being smart with my grocery budget. Anyone else get humbled by a stranger doing basic math on their cart?
The math doesn't quite work out to $60 a month unless you were eating those frozen dinners every single day. If you were getting them at $3 each and having one a day, that's about $90. Two a day would be closer to $180. The chicken at $4.99 feeding you three meals is only a better deal per meal if you actually stretch it that far. One chicken gives you maybe three servings if you're careful, so you're looking at around $1.66 a meal vs $3. Still cheaper, but the gap isn't as huge as it sounds once you add sides or whatever else you're eating with it.
