Just realized I was paying $28 a month for a gym I hadn't stepped foot in since last October
So I finally sat down and went through my debit card statement line by line last Saturday morning with my second cup of tea, and there it was, $28 a month hitting my account on the 14th like clockwork since last October. That's roughly $196 I basically lit on fire because I kept telling myself I'd go back "next week." I called them up and the guy on the phone said I had to come in person with a form, which took 20 minutes on my lunch break on Tuesday. I almost canceled and then re-signed up at a cheaper place in the same trip, but I stopped myself and just canceled. Now that $28 goes straight into my emergency fund jar, and I already have $84 in there. Anyone else got a zombie subscription that keeps eating money while you keep making excuses?
Keeping the gym membership might actually be the smarter move here. At $28 a month you are locking in a rate that new members will never see again, and gyms raise prices on new sign ups all the time. Cancel now and you will be the person paying $45 a month in two years when you finally do feel like going back. That $196 stings right now, but it is really just the cost of holding your spot in line. Plus if you had the membership sitting there, there was always a chance you would wake up one day and actually go, and now that chance is gone for good.
