Spent 7 hours building a spreadsheet to track my grocery spending and only needed 20 minutes
So last Saturday I decided I was finally going to get serious about my food budget. I opened up a blank sheet and started building this whole system with tabs for each category, a running total, color coded cells, the works. I told myself I would only spend an hour on it. Seven hours later I was still messing with formulas at 11pm and my wife was asking if I was coming to bed. The whole time the only thing I really needed was a simple list of what I spent each week, which took me 20 minutes to throw together on Sunday. I had basically built a spaceship to go to the corner shop. The worst part is I got so wrapped up in making it pretty that I never once looked at what the numbers were telling me. Has anyone else gone way overboard setting up a budget tool when a notebook and a pen would have done the job?
