A $6 pair of wool socks lasted me 4 winters but my $40 ones fell apart in 8 months
Ok so this one snuck up on me. About three years back I grabbed a two pack of thick wool socks at a farm store outside Bozeman because my feet were freezing on a job site, and I figured they were throwaways. Fast forward to last month, I'm sorting laundry and notice those cheap socks have zero holes while a fancy pair I bought online for $40 a pop blew out at the heel after one winter. Same wash routine, same boots, same amount of walking. I sat there holding both pairs trying to figure out what the price tag was even paying for. The expensive ones were softer out of the bag, but soft clearly did not mean tough. Now I'm second guessing a lot of my gear buys where I paid extra for comfort. Has anyone else had cheap wool outlast the pricey stuff, and is there a way to spot the difference in the store?
