Is paying $180 for a cast iron skillet actually worth it, or did I fall for hype?

I bought a fancy cast iron skillet a year ago for $180 and it's been incredible, no rust, heats evenly, and I use it almost daily. But my buddy swears his $30 lodge from the hardware store does the exact same thing after 5 years of abuse. I get that the expensive one has a smoother surface and better handle balance, but is that really worth 6 times the price for something that'll outlive us both either way? For those of you who've owned both cheap and premium cast iron, did the costly version actually change your cooking or last longer, or are we all just paying for branding? I'm starting to think the real BIFL move is just buying the cheap one and seasoning it well, but I want to hear the other side before I admit that to myself.

Shops that sell vintage cast iron will tell you the old Wagner and Griswold pans sell for $100+ because the factory machining made them lighter and smoother than anything made today, so that $180 is basically paying for modern artisans to replicate what was standard 80 years ago. Cheap Lodge is heavier but functionally identical, and honestly the only real upgrade that matters is if your wrists hate you after cooking.
