Been cutting dados wrong for 7 years before a shop visit showed me

Was at a buddy's shop in Portland last month. He watched me set up a dado stack. Took me five minutes fiddling with shims. He just laughed and showed me his dial-in method with a single test cut. Whole thing took thirty seconds. Now I feel dumb. Anyone else have a basic skill they did backward forever?

Spent a decade sharpening chisels on a grinder before someone told me...

Oh man, that hurts to read haha. I spent like three years using a dull chisel for everything before I figured out I could actually sharpen it myself. My dad just handed me a file and said "good luck" so I thought that was the way. When someone finally showed me how to do it right with a stone it was like a whole new tool. Still can't believe I wasted all that time though.
