I've been sharpening my chisels wrong for years and a guy in my shop class pointed it out

I was working on a maple drawer front and my chisel kept tearing out the grain, even though I thought my edge was sharp. The instructor walked by, held it up to the light, and said, 'Your primary bevel is too steep, you're basically just pushing wood instead of cutting it.' I dropped the angle from 30 degrees to 25 and it sliced through like butter. How do you all check your bevel angles, just by eye or do you use a guide?

That old GE guide from the 80s is what my dad always used. @the_elliot, it's the one with the red cover and the big chart. You just don't see that kind of simple, clear info anymore. It really was a perfect tool.
