I finally realized how install chats have changed over the years
People used to be curious and ask lots of questions while I worked. Now, they usually stay quiet or focus on their devices, which makes the job feel different.

Was just reading an article that called it the 'service sector silence.' It said devices are part of it, but it's also because people now see a service visit as a transaction, not a social event. They have a script in their head: person arrives, works, leaves. Like @grantt11 said, the quiet doesn't make it faster, it just makes it feel sort of empty, like you're a ghost in their house. I had a guy last week who only looked up from his tablet to point at which printer needed fixing. It's definitely the new normal.

Man, that's so true! I've seen this shift myself and it's kinda wild. What do you think caused the big change, is it just phones or something deeper? Does the quiet make the work go faster or just feel more empty? Have you found any way to get people talking again, or is it a lost cause? I wonder if this is just how all service jobs are now.
