Unpopular opinion: the repair cafe I visited in Asheville last Saturday showed me most camera repairers are gatekeeping simple fixes
I stopped by a repair cafe in Asheville last Saturday and watched a 70 year old volunteer reseat a loose lens mount on a guy's camera in about 10 minutes with a small screwdriver. What got me was the crowd standing around acting like it was brain surgery, when really the whole fix was 4 screws and a bit of patience. We keep telling people this stuff is too hard or too risky, and that's exactly why shops can charge $85 minimum just to look at a camera with a slow shutter. I've taught maybe 15 people to clean their own sensors and not one of them messed anything up. So why are we still acting like basic maintenance has to go through a tech bench? Would you teach a walk in how to do a simple fix, or is that bad for the trade?
