A guy at the campsite said my tent stakes were doing more harm than good
He pointed out I was hammering those thin aluminum ones into rocky soil at 45 degrees when they should just be pushed in straight. After watching me struggle for 10 minutes he handed me some heavy duty steel ones, and honestly it held way better through that windstorm near Flagstaff. Anybody else switch stake styles after a random encounter like that?

45 degrees into rocky soil sounds like asking for bent stakes.

Right? @adam_hernandez totally nailed that one. I tried the same angle in some packed clay last spring and my first stake bent into a pretzel shape before I even got it halfway down. Had to switch to sledgehammering in some rebar rods just to get any kind of hold. Rocky soil laughs at 45 degrees, it really does.
