My new sleeping bag liner ripped after one night in the Sierras
Bought a silk liner for my 20-degree bag to add a bit of warmth. Woke up with a huge tear along the seam after a night on granite. Are these things just too delicate for real backpacking?

Silk liners are famous for that... they feel nice at home but just can't handle rough ground. Granite will find every weak spot. Maybe look at a light fleece or a polyester liner instead, something that can take a bit of abrasion. The weight is similar but they're way tougher for actual trail use. It's a bummer to have gear fail on the first night out.

Yeah, the "feel nice at home" part is the trap. I fell for it too, bought a fancy one for a trip a few years back. Mine didn't even make it to the granite, it snagged on a zipper and looked like it got in a fight with a cat. They're just not built for real use, only for feeling fancy in your living room. I switched to a basic fleece sack and it's been through way worse without a mark. It's a lesson you only learn once, usually the hard way.

Ngl I had a buddy who brought a silk liner to the Winds and woke up with it shredded like a spiderweb from just rolling around on his pad. He patched it with duct tape but gave up after the second night and just stuffed it in his pack. Tough lesson for sure, silk is more for glamping than granite.
