Split the cost of a $450 tent with my brother, never again

We went halves on a big four-person tent for a trip to Shenandoah last October. Great tent, but sharing gear with family is a pain. He took it for a solo trip in March and came back with a torn fly. Didn't tell me until we were packing for our next trip. Now I'm out my share of the repair cost and half the use. Anyone else split expensive gear and regret it? Do you just buy your own now?

That tent drama is why I only split gear with people who already own backup stuff.
