I used to think certifications were a scam until a hiring manager in Austin told me otherwise.

For years I skipped getting any certs because I figured real work experience was all that mattered. Then last month I was talking to a manager at a tech meetup and he flat out said they filter resumes by certs first. No cert, you don't even get looked at. That changed my mind fast. Anyone else had a similar wake up call?

Gotta disagree with that take honestly. I've been on both sides of the hiring table and certs are just a checkbox, not a shortcut to getting hired. If a place filters by certs first, they're probably lazy or just want to make their job easier. Most actual good engineers I know don't bother with certs because they're too busy building stuff and solving real problems. Certs can help if you're trying to break into a field with zero experience, but once you have a solid work history they're just paper. A manager who admits they toss out resumes without certs is telling you they value appearances over actual skill.

Read a study somewhere that said certs expire faster than the time it takes to actually learn the material. Makes you wonder if half these certs are just a money grab by the companies that issue them.

And that's not just tech either, man. Feels like everything comes with some kind of renewal fee or subscription these days, even stuff that used to just work. You buy a chainsaw now and it's got a chip in it that locks up if you don't pay for the yearly software update or whatever. Kinda makes you wonder what's actually worth investing in long term anymore, doesn't it?
