My old boss's 'stay 5 years minimum' advice cost me a $12k raise in Cleveland
I followed his rule like gospel for 4 years at the same shop, then my buddy switched jobs twice in 18 months and now he's making more than me with worse hours, so why do we keep telling people that loyalty is some kind of virtue when the math clearly says it's not?

Are you sure switching jobs is really the whole story here, or could your buddy have just gotten lucky with timing and a better negotiator? $12k is real money, but it's not like you're stuck in some poverty trap, you're just sitting on a solid base. Maybe the real lesson isn't "loyalty is dumb," it's that you should have checked the market yourself instead of blaming some old rule for your choice.
