My 22 year old intern said my degree track was obsolete and she might be right

She told me my communications degree from 1998 is basically worthless now because every company just wants people who can run their own social media and write SEO copy. Have any of you older folks gone back to get a second degree or certification to stay relevant?

Communications skills never really go out of style though.

Oh, give me a break. That intern has a point and I wish more people would admit it. A communications degree from 1998 is not the same as one today, and pretending otherwise is just stubborn. The job market has completely changed and those old school PR and press release skills just don't cut it anymore unless you're in a very traditional industry. Companies now want people who can actually produce content, not just talk about how to communicate. Your intern might be blunt, but she's living in the real world where you need to show you can write for algorithms and run a TikTok account. I think it's smart to consider going back for something practical like a digital marketing certificate or a bootcamp in social media management.
