The retired welder in Boise told me to stop padding my resume with certs and just show one thing I built
I was sitting at a job fair in Boise last Thursday, third one in two months, and this retired welder named Gary stopped at my table. I had a resume with 14 different certifications listed, everything from forklift to food safety, thinking it made me look well rounded. He picked it up, looked at it for maybe 8 seconds, and said "You've done a little of everything and none of it matters to me." Then he asked me one question. What have you built with your hands that took more than a day? I pulled up a photo of a workbench I made for my garage, and he spent the next 20 minutes asking about the joints and the wood. Told me the next fair is in Twin Falls on the 12th and to bring the actual bench next time. I took six certs off my resume that night and added a page with three photos of real stuff I made. Has anyone else had a hiring person flat out tell them the certs are noise?
