Left no gap and now the boards are buckling in the heat.

Welp, learned that lesson the hard way too. I mean my deck looked like a roller coaster one summer, all because I got lazy with the spacers.

Man, we always forget those little gaps matter for water runoff too.

Yeah, and if water pools up, it's not just ugly. That moisture gets underneath and starts rotting the boards way faster than you'd think. Then you're looking at a full replacement instead of just a fix.
