My boss told me to always double-check the grade stamp on pressure-treated lumber

He said he saw a deck fail in Tacoma last year because someone used the wrong grade for ground contact. I found a whole stack marked for above-ground only that was about to go on a fence line, saving a big headache. How often do you guys actually look at those stamps before you cut?

Wow, I check every single piece now after a similar close call.

How bad was your close call? Honestly, that kind of thing sticks with you. I had one last year that made my heart stop, so I totally get the new habit. Tbh, it's exhausting but you just can't be too careful anymore.

Man, that's a scary find. @phoenixcampbell is right, it really does stick with you. The stamp isn't just for ground contact, it also shows the retention level for the preservative. I caught some marked for .25 that was headed for a wet area, needed .40.
