Switched from nail gun to pre-drilling on oak trim, no more split ends

I always relied on a 15ga finish nailer for baseboard, but after ruining two 8ft lengths of white oak on a job in Asheville last month, I bit the bullet and pre-drilled every hole. It added maybe 20 minutes per room but zero wasted material, and the joints sit tighter. Anyone else pre-drill on hardwood or just use a blunter nail?

Twenty minutes a room sounds like a lot of extra work for oak that might not even split that bad.
