Bought a whole chicken for $4.50 instead of packs of thighs and it blew my mind

Last month at the H-E-B in San Antonio I grabbed a whole chicken on a whim and got like 4 meals out of it after breaking it down and using the bones for broth. Has anyone else tried switching to whole birds for the savings or am I just late to this party?

Man that's exactly how I felt when I first tried it. I was buying pre-cut thighs for years and finally gave a whole bird a shot and couldn't believe how much extra meat I got off it. The broth alone made it worth it if you ask me.

Wait, do you mean the price per pound ends up being way better too, @charles678? I know what you mean about the broth though - I got a whole chicken last week and the bones alone made such a rich stock I used it for three meals. But I have to gently push back on one thing: I think pre-cut thighs can actually be cheaper per pound if you catch them on sale, especially at places like Aldi or Lidl where they often price them below whole birds. Overall though, you can't beat the flavor and the leftovers from a whole bird, so I'm totally with you on giving it a shot.
