I ignored my grandmother's advice about dried beans for 10 years.
She told me to always soak them overnight with a pinch of baking soda to make them cook faster and be less gassy. Finally tried it last month and my chili is way cheaper and actually digestible now - anyone else have a family tip they stubbornly ignored?

Man it's wild how we do that with older folks' advice. There's this whole pattern where we think "old" means "outdated" but really it just means "tested forever." So many kitchen shortcuts our grandmas knew got lost because we wanted the faster modern way. And then we finally try it and realize we've been making everything harder than it needed to be for years. It's like a stubbornness tax we all pay until we finally listen.

My grandma had this old cast iron skillet that she used for everything, eggs, cornbread, even steaks. I remember thinking it was just some heavy, ugly pan. Then I tried cooking a steak in my fancy nonstick pan and it came out terrible, so I borrowed hers and it was the best steak I ever made. That skillet had decades of seasoning built into it, no coating to scratch, just years of use. @charliehill you hit on something real with that stubbornness tax idea. It makes me wonder how many other simple things we ignore just because they aren't shiny and new.
