Rant: my uncle swore a $1.25 bag of frozen mixed veggies beats fresh, and now I'm not so sure he's wrong
My uncle Dave in Toledo kept telling me frozen broccoli and peppers are just as good as fresh and cost a third of the price, and I blew him off for a year. Then I priced it out last week: $1.25 for a 16 oz bag versus $4.50 for the same amount fresh at Kroger, and the frozen stuff never went bad in my fridge. But here's the thing, fresh tastes way better in a stir fry and I can't get past the mushy texture. So who's actually right here, are you team frozen for the savings or team fresh for the taste?
My wife bought a 5 lb bag of frozen stir fry mix at Costco last month for like $8 and I laughed at her. Then I did the math and fresh peppers alone would've run me $12 at Meijer for the same amount. Here's the trick I learned though, you gotta cook the frozen stuff different. Dump it in a dry hot pan first and let the water cook off before you add oil, otherwise it steams and turns to mush. Takes an extra 4 or 5 minutes but the texture comes out way better. Uncle Dave is right on the money part but wrong if he says it's just as good raw or lightly cooked. Frozen wins for soups, stews, and anything with sauce. Fresh wins for a quick high heat stir fry where you actually want a crunch. So they're both right depending on what you're making.
