My $4 chisel beat the $40 one on my 1890s farmhouse trim, and I'm still surprised
Last month I was pulling paint off the window casings in my 1890s farmhouse in Athens, and I tried two tools side by side on the same window. My fancy $40 carbide scraper kept digging into the soft old pine and gouging the profile, but a $4 flea market chisel I sharpened on a wet stone slid under the paint clean and barely touched the wood. Same window, same paint, two very different results, and I finished the trim in about 3 hours instead of fighting it all weekend. Has anyone else found a cheap tool that just works better on old growth wood than the new stuff?
Whoa, a $4 chisel beating a $40 scraper is cool and all, but is this really worth a whole post? Sounds like you just finally learned how to sharpen a tool right.
