Stuck a shop vac hose in a blackened flue and pulled out a bird nest the size of a beach ball
Had a customer in Dover call me out because smoke was rolling back into her living room every time she lit a fire, and I could not get a brush past a certain point about 6 feet up. I tried the usual weighted chain first and it just bounced, so on a hunch I taped my shop vac hose to a short piece of PVC and fed it up from the smoke shelf. Sure enough it grabbed something soft, and when I pulled it down it was a starling nest packed in so tight it looked like a wig. Took two more passes with the vac and a flexible rod to get the rest, and she told me the birds had been fussing around the cap since April. Has anyone else run into a nest that far down, or do you usually catch them up top?
Ever notice how the weird stuff always hides where you can't see it, not where you'd expect? Same deal with a clogged gutter or a dryer vent, the real mess is never right at the opening. Birds just love a spot that's out of sight and out of the wind.
