Used to scrub creosote with a wire brush for 45 minutes, now I let a $12 pumice stone do the work
For the first 6 years I was on my own, I attacked every firebox with a wire brush and a scraper, and it killed my wrists. Last March a guy named Dale at a supply shop in Tulsa showed me how a pumice stone knocks glaze off the brick in about 5 minutes without scratching. I still keep the brush for the flue, but the box gets the stone first now. Anybody else had luck using one on really baked on stage 3 glaze, or do you still go chemical for the bad ones?
Man, the pumice stone trick saved my hands too, but here's something nobody talks about: those stones load up with glaze dust and start smearing it around instead of cutting. Rinse it in a bucket of warm water every couple passes and it keeps biting like new. On stage 3 stuff I do stone first to knock the top layer down, then a light spray of oven cleaner on just the stubborn spots, let it sit 10 minutes, and the rest wipes right off. Cuts the chemical use way down and you're not breathing that stuff in a hot box.
