Neighbor's porch theory made me rethink west side block parties

Marjorie from down on Wendover told me our block party works BECAUSE no one coordinates it, and she's got a point after ours got 40 people last weekend. Am I crazy for ditching the neighborhood group chat's sign-up sheets and just letting potluck chaos happen?

But the sign-up sheets exist for a reason, and that reason is people like me who show up with a bag of chips when the grill is supposed to be fired up and running. Sure, the chaos works for a crowd that already knows each other, but that falls apart the minute a new family moves in and brings nothing but a six-pack of warm soda. You might call it organic, but I call it a good way to make the quiet folks on the block feel left out before they ever get a chance to know anyone.
