That one tip from the guy at Dave's Market about lawn seeding actually worked
Some older fella in the gardening aisle told me to skip the fancy seed mats and just use peat moss over bare spots. Did three patches in my backyard last fall and they're the thickest grass on my whole lawn now. Any west siders found a trick that actually panned out?

My buddy Carl tried that peat moss trick last spring on his patchy lawn over by Hamilton Park, you know the one with the big oak tree in the front. He did it exactly like the old guy said, just raked the seed into the bare dirt and put a thin layer of peat moss on top, kept it damp for a couple weeks. By the time summer hit, his lawn looked way better than mine and I had bought all that expensive starter fertilizer and straw. The peat moss held the moisture in way better than the straw did on my lawn, and it broke down into the soil instead of just sitting there looking ugly. He still talks about it every time we grab a beer, says it was the cheapest fix he ever did. Must be something to hearing advice from people who have been doing this longer than we have.

...and honestly @noah880's buddy Carl's story sounds just like what happened to me with my sprinkler system last year. I think that's the thing about these old-timer tricks... they've been around so long because they actually work, not because someone's trying to sell you something. The peat moss trick seems to be one of those simple solutions that just makes sense when you think about it, like how my grandpa used to put coffee grounds around his tomato plants before that was a trendy thing online. It's funny how we overcomplicate stuff with fancy products when the basics usually do the job better.
