I don't think recycling is the answer and a guy named Dale at a Phoenix transfer station changed my mind about it
Dale watched me toss a rinsed peanut butter jar into the blue bin last March and said 'that jar rides 400 miles to get sorted and half of it still ends up buried,' which is why I now push for repair cafes and bottle bills over curbside blue bins and I'm wondering if anyone here has actually watched their city's recycling get dumped.
Dale's not wrong about the long haul and the waste, but scrapping curbside pickup for repair cafes and bottle bills feels like throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Those things are great, yet they only cover certain items, and plenty of folks won't drive across town to drop off a bag of cans. Fix the system we already have instead of ditching it, because the blue bin still catches way more stuff than a once a month repair event ever could.
