Had to pick between water-cooled and air-cooled spindle for my new build
I was setting up my first CNC router last month and got stuck on whether to go with a water-cooled spindle or an air-cooled one. Everyone online said water is quieter and runs cooler, but I was worried about the hassle of a pump and radiator. I went with water-cooled after a guy on here warned me about air-cooled spindles throwing hot chips right at your workpiece during aluminum cuts. First week with it, I'm running 4 hour jobs and the spindle barely gets warm, plus I can actually hear my tool cutting without earplugs. The pump setup was annoying to get right, but now I just fill the bucket once a week. Has anyone else gone both ways and regretted one or the other?

Honestly I read some guy on another forum say his air-cooled spindle threw chips so hot they melted into his vacuum table and that was enough to make me go water. Tbh the pump noise is barely anything compared to the router screaming from an air setup, at least in my shop. Ngl I don't envy anyone dealing with those hot chips on aluminum either, sounds like a nightmare to clean up.

Blame it on the guy who melted his vacuum table, now the rest of us are stuck listening to gurgling pumps instead of that lovely hot chip smell. At least with water cooling you can pretend you're running a fancy hydroponics setup on the side instead of just cutting aluminum. Sure beats scraping molten plastic off your table though, so I guess we all win in the end.
