I skipped version control for 6 months because Git looked scary, then a guy on my crew made me try it
My foreman Dave watched me back up my project files by renaming them project_v2, project_v3, project_final, and he finally sat me down and made me install Git. I fought him for 2 weeks saying I did not need a command line for a simple budgeting script, but my laptop crashed on a Tuesday and Git brought back 3 weeks of work in about 10 seconds. I still do not get branching, but I was wrong about the fear being worth it. What finally made Git click for you, or is there something easier I should try next?
Project_final" made me laugh because a buddy of mine did the exact same thing with his fishing log app. He had files called app_backup_REAL and app_backup_REAL2 and one day he saved over the wrong one and lost a month of catch records. His kid showed him Git in like 20 minutes and he still calls commits "save points" like it's a video game. That naming system works great until the day it doesn't, and then it costs you everything. Branching took me way longer than the basics, so you're not alone there. Next step for you might just be GitHub so your saves live somewhere other than that laptop.
