Looking back at my first coffee setup in a tiny apartment kitchen

Back in 2015, my 'grinder' was a cheap blade chopper I got for $20, and I'd boil water in a regular pot for my French press. The coffee was always bitter and uneven (you know, like chewing on grounds). The change came after I visited a friend in Portland who showed me her burr grinder and gooseneck kettle. I saved up and got my own basic setup about two years ago, and it's crazy how much more control I have over the flavor now. Anyone else have a 'before and after' moment with their gear that made a huge difference?

Honestly all that gear just seems like extra steps for the same caffeine hit. My old blade grinder gets the job done and I don't need a fancy kettle to pour hot water. Sometimes I think people just like buying stuff more than they like the coffee.

I get where adams.vera is coming from, but better gear really did change the game for me too.

My first setup was a thrift store percolator that made everything taste like burnt tires. I used pre-ground coffee from a can for years because I didn't know any better. Trying a simple pour-over at a friend's house was a real shock, it was like drinking a different drink. I finally upgraded to a basic scale and a hand grinder last year, and I can't believe I waited so long.
