Vent: my grinder jammed at 6am and I almost threw the whole thing in the trash
Last Tuesday I was half asleep in my kitchen in Akron trying to make a pour over before work, and my hand grinder just locked up solid about 15 seconds in. I had already heated the kettle to 205 and rinsed the filter, so I stood there poking at the burrs with a butter knife like an idiot. Turned out a single dark roasted bean from a batch I bought 3 weeks ago had wedged itself sideways in the burr set. Here is where I want to hear from folks. I dumped the whole thing out, cleaned it, and started over from scratch, which cost me 10 minutes and made me late. My buddy says you should never dig around in there with metal and that I should have just banged it on the counter. The other side of the argument is that a paper clip or wooden toothpick is the safe move and I was reckless. So what is the right call when a grinder seizes mid batch, do you muscle through it or dump and reset? I still do not know if I messed up the burrs by prying at them.
Wait, a butter knife? On the burrs? That is straight up terrifying, you were one slip away from a real bad morning. Banging it on the counter feels just as sketchy to me though, that seems like a good way to crack the housing or knock the alignment out. Toothpick all day, that is the only move that makes any sense here.
