My neighbor Dave changed how I think about lawn mowing at 8am on a Sunday

Dave came over last Saturday morning while I was about to fire up the mower and asked if I ever just let the clippings lie. I told him no, I always bag them because my dad did. He laughed and said yeah but for 30 years he was just making more work and worse grass. Now I'm sitting here wondering how many other things I do out of habit that are totally pointless. Anyone else ever had a neighbor or stranger casually wreck your whole routine with one sentence?

My dad taught me to push the clutch in all the way at every stop sign and I did that for 15 years before a mechanic friend told me it was wearing out my throwout bearing for no reason at all. It's wild how much of what we do is just copying someone else without ever questioning it.

My mom had this thing where she'd tap the brakes three times before every turn. I did it for years until a buddy asked why I was being so dramatic with my braking. Weird how much family driving habits stick with you, huh?
