A guy at a convention said my pull list was 'too safe' and I can't stop thinking about it

Last Saturday at the small con in Dayton, some random dude glanced at my stack and said that. He had a point. I've been grabbing the same 5 Batman and X-Men titles for like 3 years straight. Meanwhile he showed me his bag, all indie stuff I'd never heard of, and two of them looked amazing. I grabbed one mini-series he recommended, read it in one night, and honestly my usual weekly haul feels boring now. Any of you ever have a stranger completely change how you buy comics, or is my new habit just a phase?
