I think the push for 'modern' comic art is actually hurting new readers

My local shop in Denver had a new reader event last weekend, and they were pushing these super abstract, digital-first books. A friend brought his 12 year old who just wanted a classic Spider-Man story, but everything on the 'recommended' wall looked like a messy screen grab. I had to dig in the back issue bins to find him something with clear storytelling. Why are we making the entry point so visually confusing? Has anyone else seen new fans get turned off by overly stylized art?

So what exactly makes a comic "modern" to these shops anyway?

Yeah john_singh, it's mostly just a date thing for shops, like anything from the 90s onward.
