My comic shop exclusive variant came with a printing defect - store won't refund since it's a "limited release"

Picked up the foil cover for issue #4 at my local shop in Austin last Saturday. Got it home and the entire last 6 pages are blank. Like just white paper. Called the store Sunday morning and the owner said since it's a limited run variant with only 500 copies, they can't do returns or exchanges. Told me to contact the publisher. Emailed them and got an automated response saying to take it back to the store. Now I'm stuck with a $35 paperweight. Has anyone actually gotten a refund on a damaged limited variant or am I just out the cash?

Limited run" just means limited run of excuses.

Exactly. "Limited run" is just code for "we didn't order enough and now we're scrambling." I've been through this with a few small brands that pulled that same trick. Here's the real deal: if you actually want something, don't wait for the next "limited run." Pre-order it the second it drops, or you'll be stuck refreshing resale sites paying double. I learned that the hard way with a jacket that sold out in minutes, and the brand just said "sorry, maybe next time." They ended up restocking it three months later anyway, so the whole "limited" thing was just hype. Always check the production numbers if you can, or just assume anything with that label is a setup for disappointment.
